Korea Oceanographic Data and Information Service (KODIS)

Introduction of KODIS
National Fisheries Research and Development Institute(NFRDI) has carried out "Korea Oceanographic Data and Information Service" project from 2000 for promoting oceanographic data and information exchange in a national and international basis. This project was initiated in 1999 by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries(MOMAF) and transferred to NFRDI in 2000. For a successful work of the project, a preliminary study had been carried out from November 1997 to July 1998 for defining the target and the scope, designing the format of database and estimating the total and yearly budget. Major purposes of this project are developing information systems on marine affairs and on metadata of the oceanographic datasets, and also developing user interfaces for supporting users to access the databases.
  • Information System on Oceanographic Metadata

The purpose of the Information System on Oceanographic Metadata is promoting data and information exchange and collaboration of the oceanographic data and products collected by various research and survey projects carried by national funds among marine communities, and major scopes and targets are setting up standard format of the metadata, collecting data and information for inserting the database, and developing user interfaces for accessing the database.
Data and information sources are mainly collected from National Fisheries Research and Development Institute(NFRDI), National Oceanographic Research Institute(NORI) and Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute(KORDI), and a few sources are collected from universities. All data items described in Marine Scientific Research Act are covered in the system.

  • Information System on Marine Affairs

The purpose of the Information System on Marine Affairs is building databases necessary for planning and implementing various marine policies, and developing user interfaces for accessing those databases.
Now, six databases including marine research and survey projects database are designed and implemented, and also updated annually.
Six databases are on Marine Research and Survey Projects, Marine Related Organizations, Experts in Marine Issues, Vessels, International Marine Organizations, and International Marine Policy Reports.
